Coastal Student Hub with Big Energy.

Brighton & Hove is one of the UK’s most recognisable student cities. Located on the south coast of England, it’s known for its pebble beach, nightlife and progressive culture. It’s louder, busier and more fast-paced than cities like Exeter or Bath, with hints of London by the sea, and that’s part of the appeal.

The city is home to the University of Sussex and the University of Brighton. Although they share the same city, their campuses and daily rhythms feel quite different.  Brighton is also a major UK tourist destination, which affects rent, prices, crowds and availability, especially in summer.

Everyday Student Life in Brighton & Hove

Daily life in Brighton & Hove depends on which university and campus you attend.

Students at the University of Sussex are based mainly at Falmer, just outside the city centre near the South Downs. The campus is self-contained and feels slightly removed from the tourist-heavy centre. Trains and buses connect Falmer to central Brighton in about 10 minutes.

University of Brighton students are spread across multiple campuses: City Campus, Moulsecoomb, Falmer and Eastbourne. That means daily life can look very different depending on your course.

Student Accommodation in Brighton & Hove

First-year students often live in university-managed halls. For many, this is the easiest way to settle in. Contracts are straightforward, bills are included, and you’re placed among other new students who are all in the same position.

At the University of Sussex, most first years live on the Falmer campus. It’s convenient, especially during winter, and you don’t need to worry about commuting in your first term. The downside is you can feel slightly removed from central Brighton’s energy, particularly in the evenings, unless you head into town.

At the University of Brighton, halls are more spread out. Some are close to campuses like Moulsecoomb or Falmer, while others are nearer the city centre. That means first-year experience can vary depending on location. If you’re based centrally, you’re closer to nightlife and part-time work. If you’re further out, you may rely more on buses.

Rooms range from standard shared-bathroom options to en-suite flats. Brighton accommodation is rarely cheap, and even halls can feel expensive compared to other UK cities. That said, having utilities included and no agency fees makes budgeting simpler in the first year.

Halls and purpose-built student accommodation are also where many students build their initial friendship groups. Because Brighton is larger and more spread out than Exeter or Bath, living in halls helps reduce that feeling of anonymity early on.

For most students, first-year halls and shared accommodation provide structure and social access, but by second year, many are ready to move into shared housing to gain more independence. After the first year, most students move into private housing in areas such as Lewes Road, Hanover, Hollingdean, Hove and Kemptown. Competition for houses can be intense. Many students begin looking very early in the academic year, which can put real pressure on finding a friendship group fast, which some students can find stressful.

Where Are The Best Places to Live?

Best Areas for Students in Brighton & Hove

    Lewes Road:

Lewes Road is one of the most student-dense parts of Brighton. It connects the city centre with both Sussex and Brighton campuses, which makes it practical.

You’ll find constant bus routes, supermarkets (Aldi, Sainsbury’s), takeaways and pubs. It’s functional rather than picturesque. Traffic is heavy, and the main road can feel noisy.

Housing is typically older terraced houses converted into student rentals. Quality varies significantly. Some are well-maintained. Others are cramped, poorly insulated and expensive for what they are.

The benefit is location. You’re well-connected to both universities and nightlife. The downside? It’s busy, loud and rarely feels calm.

    Hanover:

Hanover sits on a steep hill above the city centre and has a strong community feel. Colourful terraced houses and small independent pubs give it character.

It’s about a 15-20 minute walk into central Brighton, though the hills are noticeable. Cycling uphill is a workout.

Housing here is competitive and often expensive because demand is high. Streets feel quieter than Lewes Road but are still very student-friendly. Hanover suits students who want to walk home from nights out and prefer a slightly more residential atmosphere.

    Hollingdean:

Hollingdean is further north and usually slightly cheaper. It feels more residential and less central.

Bus journeys into town take around 20-30 minutes, depending on traffic. Cycling is possible but involves hills.

You won’t have cafés and nightlife on your doorstep. Evenings are quieter. For some students, that’s a positive, but for others, it feels removed from the social core.

    Hove:

Hove feels more polished and less chaotic than central Brighton. Wider streets, Regency buildings and beach access define the area.

It’s around a 20-30 minute walk to central Brighton, depending on where you are. Buses are regular.

Rent is typically high, and many properties are flats rather than large shared houses. It attracts both students and young professionals.

    Kemptown:

Kemptown sits to the east of the pier and has a lively, slightly alternative feel. It’s close to the beach and central nightlife.

It’s popular but expensive. Housing is often converted flats rather than large houses. And, because of its proximity to nightlife, it can often be lively - especially in summer.

    What’s the City Like?

The city centre itself is compact but dense. North Laine, Churchill Square and Western Road are where most day-to-day errands happen. You’ll find supermarkets, vintage shops, cafés and independent food spots packed closely together.

Because Brighton is a major tourist destination, the city centre is rarely quiet. Weekends, summer and bank holidays bring a noticeable increase in visitors. Beaches fill up. Restaurants get busy. Prices rarely feel “student cheap.”

    Brighton living
    Nightlife

Brighton’s reputation as a party city didn’t appear overnight. From the 1960s onwards, it developed a strong association with counterculture, live music and weekend tourism. Its seaside location made it an easy escape from London, and over time it became known for club nights, LGBTQ+ venues and an independent music scene that gave the city a distinctive identity.

By the 1990s and 2000s, Brighton had established itself as one of the UK’s key nightlife destinations outside the capital. Large clubs, beachfront parties and student-heavy midweek events became part of the city’s character. Pride grew into one of the biggest events of its kind in the UK, reinforcing Brighton’s image as open, expressive and socially liberal.

That legacy is still visible. There’s a strong late-night economy, a visible live music culture and a sense that going out is part of the city’s DNA. At the same time, rising rents, licensing restrictions and changing student habits have reshaped parts of the scene. Some older venues have closed, and nightlife now feels more commercial and more expensive than it once did.

What remains is the expectation that Brighton is a place where nightlife matters. For students who value that energy, it’s a draw. For those who don’t, it's something to be aware of before choosing the city.

Clubs such as Pryzm, Chalk and Patterns host large student nights and guest DJs. Smaller venues focus on live music and alternative scenes. Because Brighton attracts tourists, nightlife often includes non-students, especially in summer. Stag and hen parties are common. Drink prices are higher than in northern cities, and entry fees add up quickly.

    Food Scene

Brighton’s food scene is one of its biggest strengths, and one of the reasons many students choose the city.

Because Brighton is a major tourist destination, there’s constant demand for independent restaurants and cafés. That creates real variety,  but it also keeps prices higher than many other UK student cities.

North Laine is the centre of independent food culture. Within a few streets, you’ll find:

    • Food for Friends: one of the UK’s longest-running vegetarian restaurants, popular for group dinners. Expect £15-£22 for mains.
    • The Chilli Pickle: modern Indian cuisine near Jubilee Square. Mains typically £16-£25.
    • Wahaca Brighton: Mexican small plates, around £18-£25 for a full meal.
    • The Pond: known for bao buns and small plates (£8-£14).
    • Iydea: budget-friendly vegetarian café where you can eat for £7-£10.

For seafood, Riddle & Finns and The Salt Room are well known - but these are more special-occasion spots than regular student meals.

    Budget-friendly student staples include:

    • Falafel wraps from small North Laine counters (£6-£9)
    • Takeaway pizza or kebabs around Lewes Road (£8-£12)
    • Franco Manca Brighton for affordable sourdough pizza (£8-£12)
    • Casa Don Carlos for casual Spanish dishes (£12-£18
    • Pub meals at chains like Wetherspoons - The Bright Helm (£7-£12)

Brunch culture is big here. Places like Bill's Brighton and independent cafés along Bond Street regularly have queues at weekends. Expect £12-£18 for a brunch dish and £3-£4 for coffee.

Brighton is nationally known for vegan and vegetarian options. Plant-based menus are standard rather than niche. That’s a genuine strength of the city.

Late-night food is widely available around West Street and North Laine. After club nights at Pryzm or Chalk, it’s easy to find somewhere open past midnight.

The key thing to understand is that Brighton is not cheap. Regular eating out quickly adds up, especially near the seafront, where prices reflect tourist demand. Many students cook during the week and treat restaurants as social occasions rather than everyday habits.

    Culture & Creative Scene

Brighton has a strong creative identity, with street art, independent theatres and live music venues forming part of daily life. Brighton Pride and Brighton Festival bring massive crowds and transform the city each year.

Because Brighton is a major cultural destination, there is almost always something happening, but that also means crowds and disruption during peak seasons.

Wellbeing & Student Support in Brighton & Hove

Brighton offers energy, creativity and opportunity, but it can also feel intense.

The city is busy year-round. Tourism, nightlife and a constant event calendar mean it rarely feels completely quiet, particularly in central areas like North Laine, West Street or Kemptown. For some students, that energy is motivating and social. For others, especially in the first year, it can feel overstimulating.

A group of students are studying together in the Student Success Center.
    University support services

Both the University of Sussex and the University of Brighton provide counselling services, mental health advisers and academic support teams. Demand can be high during exam periods and dissertation season, so early booking is important. There are also peer mentoring schemes and wellbeing workshops throughout the year.

At Sussex, the Falmer campus offers more physical separation from the city centre. Some students find that helpful; you can step away from Brighton’s intensity and still be near green space. The South Downs are right behind campus, and many students walk or run there as a way to decompress.

Brighton students based in central campuses don’t have that same physical buffer. If you live near nightlife areas, noise can be a factor. Choosing accommodation slightly further out  (Hanover, Hollingdean or Hove) can make a noticeable difference if you value peace and quiet.

    Health, balance and community

Access to the sea is genuinely beneficial. Walking along the seafront, sitting on the beach after lectures or swimming in warmer months is part of everyday life. That coastal access gives Brighton something many student cities don’t have: space to reset without leaving town.

Brighton also has a strong LGBTQ+ presence and visible diversity, which many students find affirming and welcoming. The city’s identity as socially liberal and inclusive is not just branding. It’s part of daily culture.

Overall, Brighton suits students who thrive in high-energy environments and like having constant activity around them. For students who prefer slower, quieter cities, it’s worth thinking carefully about accommodation location and building structured routines early on.

Brighton can be exciting, inspiring and social, but managing budget, boundaries and downtime matters more here than in smaller student cities.

    Cost of living

    Will it be affordable?

Cost of Living in Brighton & Hove

Brighton is generally cheaper than Brighton, Bath and Edinburgh while still offering a strong student-city experience.

Cost of living can be one of the biggest pressures here. High rent, competitive housing markets and rising food prices mean financial planning is a must. Brighton is generally more expensive than Exeter, Bath and most northern cities, though still cheaper than London.

    • Rent (shared): £550-£800
    • Utilities & Internet: £70-£100
    • Groceries: £140-£200
    • Transport: £60-£100
    • Social & Nightlife: £140-£220

With a strong community feel and thriving thrifting scene, there are many ways students can adapt to living on a budget in Brighton & Hove, including shopping smart and sustainably, and finding work within the community to help give you an extra financial boost each month.

Finding Part-Time Work in Brighton & Hove

Many students work part-time in hospitality, but competition for jobs can increase during tourist season when roles fill quickly.

    Transport
    Transport Tips & Travel Time

Brighton is compact but dense, and traffic can slow everything down.

University of Sussex students commute between Falmer Campus and central Brighton. The train takes 10 minutes and runs frequently. Buses run constantly along Lewes Road, but can be very crowded at peak times.

University of Brighton students may travel between City Campus, Moulsecoomb and Falmer. Inter-campus travel can add 25 minutes depending on route and traffic.

Brighton has Uber alongside local taxi firms, but prices rise during busy tourist weekends or major events. Cycling is common, though hills in areas like Hanover and Hollingdean are noticeable. London Victoria is around 1 hour by train, making Brighton popular with students accessing London internships.
