]]>The good news? You don’t need years of experience to stand out. With the right approach, your student CV can showcase far more than you might think.
Start with what you’ve got
One of the most common mistakes students make is assuming they don’t have enough experience. In reality, university life builds a wide range of transferable skills that employers value.
Start by thinking about:
- Group projects and presentations you’ve completed
- Part-time jobs or volunteering you’ve taken part in
- Coursework deadlines you’ve stuck to and time management
- Societies, sports or leadership roles you’ve taken on
All of these demonstrate skills like teamwork, organisation, communication and reliability – which is exactly what employers look for.
Keep your CV clear and tailored
Once you’ve gained a clear picture of the experience you can talk about in your CV, it’s now time to think about how best to showcase this on paper – keeping it clear, consistent and focused.
Ultimately, your CV should be relevant to the role you’re applying for. Whilst it may be tempting to focus on building one mega CV that showcases your skills and experience at length – rather than sending the same version everywhere, take time to tailor it to each application.
Think about focusing on:
- Providing a short personal statement at the top
- Outlining clear sections for your education, experience, and skills
- Including bullet points that highlight achievements, not just responsibilities
For example, if you’re applying for a customer-facing role, instead of just simply listing your previous experience, such as “worked in retail”, you could say “provided customer service in a fast-paced retail environment, handling transactions and resolving queries”.
Small changes like this can make a big difference to the success of your application.
Don’t forget the structural basics
It might sound obvious, but presentation matters.
When it comes to employers, first impressions count, and your CV acts as exactly that. This means it needs to be contextually relevant, easily digestible, free of grammatical errors and clear on next steps.
Recruitment teams are often busy, inundated with applications and laden with other responsibilities in their day-to-day role – so making sure your CV is concise, eye-catching and easy to follow will help you to get noticed straight off the bat.
Before sending your CV:
- Check spelling and grammar
- Keep formatting consistent
- Use a professional email address
- Keep the document no more than a page in length
- Save your file as a PDF
A clean, well-structured CV immediately creates a strong first impression, helping you make it a step closer to landing the job of your dreams.
Make your student lifestyle work for you
Living in purpose-built student accommodation like Fresh gives you access to environments that support productivity and routine – as well as providing a support system that you can tap into to help you enter the working world.
If it's your first time creating a CV that speaks to your strengths – or applying to jobs altogether – you don't have to struggle out of the starting blocks by yourself. Our Student Be Wellbeing Programme and on-site Residents’ Teams can provide you with the support you need to put your experience on paper and ultimately, nail those all-important job applications.
It’s also important to remember that the ability to balance life as a student also showcases a wealth of desirable capabilities to potential employers. Balancing studies, social life, and independent living shows:
- Time management
- Adaptability
- Responsibility
These are qualities employers actively seek, especially in student candidates.
Confidence is key
Applying for jobs can feel daunting, but remember: every applicant has to start somewhere. Employers hiring students aren’t expecting perfection – they’re looking for the potential to grow, a positive attitude and a willingness to learn.
With the right preparation, your CV becomes more than a document. It acts as your introduction, your story and your first step into the working world.

First things first. Visit the UCAS website as soon as possible to check your status. Even if your grades just missed the mark, there’s still a chance your chosen university will accept you, so it’s a good idea to follow up with them.
The good news is there’s still a chance to enrol for an undergrad course, even if you’ve left your application a little late or haven’t got the grades you’d hoped for, thanks to the UK’s university Clearing process.
Student specialist researchers at Net Natives, predict that clearing in 2022 will be a lot busier than the previous years due to an increase in demographics of 18-year-olds alongside the re-launch of real-life exams.
What is Clearing?
Clearing is a way of matching university applicants to available places, helping universities fill up any vacancies and giving students the chance to find the most suitable course.
Clearing happens every year between July and September after exam results have been released. You can participate in Clearing If you’ve already applied through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) and one of these situations applies to you:
- You received no offers from a university.
- Your exam results aren’t as expected, and you aren’t accepted by your current choices.
- You didn’t meet the conditions or offers you received.
- You rejected an offer because you changed your mind about your chosen course or location.
- You want a place at a university but haven’t applied yet.
When Does University Clearing Start?
5th July 2022 until 18th October 2022 – any applications received after this date are automatically entered into Clearing. You can use clearing if you didn’t receive any offers or none you wanted to accept, you’ve paid the multiple-choice application fee of £26.50, or you’ve declined your firm place by using the 'decline my place’ button.
How to Get Through Clearing
Siân Duffin, Student Support Manager at Arden University, advises: “Make a Clearing kit to take with you to “results day”. A mobile phone and charger, a notepad and pen, water and some snacks. Being prepared to do some research and make some calls will benefit you when you are looking for a course. Make sure you have the correct phone numbers for your first choice and insurance choice at hand. It is also worth having the number for any university you think you might want to approach in Clearing if you don’t get into one of your choices”.
Before Results Day:
- Ideally, it helps to prepare yourself before your results come out by researching alternative options.
- If you’re worried about your grades, put a ‘plan B’ in place. Research which other unis offer the same (or similar) course as your current choice and see if there are any with slightly lower grade requirements.
- Make sure you’ve got all your info and documents handy before you make any calls. Be prepared to make notes on the calls as well.
- Be prepared for a mini-admissions interview over the phone. Don’t forget to write down your answers beforehand.
- If you don’t get time to prep, don’t panic – you can still make it through Clearing on results day.
On Results Day:
Siân says, “Call your first choice and insurance choice before you do anything else. A conversation with an admissions tutor can sometimes mean they’ll accept you or offer you an alternative, maybe a joint honours course that you hadn’t considered before. If you can, visit the university before Clearing and speak to their staff. They can advise on any steps to take if you miss your grades and have picked them as one of your choices”.
- Once exam results are released, the pace of the Clearing process picks up dramatically and every second counts. This is the day you need to be prepared to go, go, go!
- Check the UCAS Track site as early as possible to see your application status. If you’re eligible for Clearing, you’ll be given a Clearing number.
- Now you can start calling your preferred universities through their special Clearing phone lines to speak to an adviser about the course you’re interested in.
- Again, be prepared for a mini-interview over the phone. Have all your information ready and take notes.
- The adviser will confirm whether you’re accepted right there on the phone. After that, you’ll typically have 24 hours to confirm the offer or find another one.
- Once you have an offer you’re happy to accept, confirm your place on UCAS Track.
- If you’re unsure about the status of your uni place, contact the university directly to get confirmation (but be prepared to hold the line for a while – it’s a busy day).
- UCAS will also provide live updates of all courses available through Clearing.
After Clearing: Once you’ve secured a place, it’s time to start thinking about the next steps.
- Look into student accommodation in your chosen city.
- Update your student finance body on where you’ll be studying.
- Start familiarising yourself with your new university.
- Breathe – you did it!
Which Universities Take Clearing Students?
In 2021, more than 70,000 students found a place at university via clearing, and this includes courses and acceptance from some of the county’s top-ranked universities.
This year, many more Russel Group universities are offering more undergraduate places in at least five different courses via clearing, which include:
- University of Warwick (Classics, English Literature & History of Art)
- University of Bath (Civil Engineering, Mathematics & Modern Languages)
- Loughborough University (Chemistry, Geography & Mathematics)
- University of Manchester (Adult nursing, Classics & Environmental Science)
- University of Strathclyde (Aero-mechanical engineering, Biomedical Science & Business)
If you’ve made it through Clearing and you’re searching for somewhere awesome to live, Fresh has a choice of stylish student accommodation available across the UK.
“Year on year, we are seeing an increase in students applying for last-minute accommodation schemes, indicating that current views on the Clearing process have shifted and play an important role in the admissions cycle. At this time of year, students may have to make quick decisions on where they will study and live.
The Fresh Residents' Teams can assist with advice on living options and help students find their perfect room. Our accommodations offer first years a real home away from home, with a packed welcome calendar, friendly on-site accommodation teams, and all-inclusive bills, meaning that moving in is as stress-free as possible.” – Jane Crouch, Fresh Property Group COO.

]]>Using online job boards, we’ve discovered the most common graduate job requirements for each industry, revealing the skills employers look for in graduates the most.
But first, what are the top graduate skills cited for interviews overall?
14 graduate skills you need for interview success
According to Glassdoor, there are 14 top skills every graduate should develop to fast-track their interview success and secure that sought-after grad role:
- Communication
- Business Acumen
- Collaboration/Teamwork
- Adaptability
- Problem Solving
- Positivity
- Organisation
- Leadership
- Negotiation
- Confidence
- Perseverance
- Self-motivator
- Ability to work under pressure
- IT skills
On the one hand, we’re not going to disagree entirely. All of these skills are good to have and would conceivably contribute towards securing a well-paid grad role. But, while this is a good starting point, it’s not the whole picture.
The top skills to secure a grad role in your sector
It goes without saying that no two sectors are the same. Standing up in court to represent your client as a barrister is different to crunching numbers as an accountant. A consultant may be a strategy whizz, but their tech skills aren’t going to compete with a software engineer’s. Each industry requires a different specialist knowledge and lends itself to a certain set of soft skills, so the graduate skills employers want varies from sector to sector.
By looking at the industries with the most growth in demand for graduates, and comparing graduate job descriptions in each across LinkedIn, Glassdoor and Indeed, we discovered the real most important skills employers look for in graduates:

The most competitive graduate jobs
Learning the above soft skills for your industry is all the more important in a competitive sector. Our research shows these sectors have the highest interest from recent graduate candidates looking for their first role out of uni:

]]>The post What Is A Graduate Scheme? appeared first on .
]]>If you have recently graduated and are wondering what a graduate scheme is, read on to learn more, including why we think graduate schemes are worth it.

What is a graduate scheme in the UK?
Like an apprenticeship, a graduate scheme offers recent graduates a job alongside the opportunity to learn and develop their skills through a structured training programme. If you are accepted, you will have a graduate scheme job and be known as a graduate trainee.
Graduate scheme jobs are run by senior employers who aim to build a set of future leaders for their organisation. The length of a graduate scheme can last between one to two years and sometimes longer, depending on the field.
Graduate schemes are usually found in industries such as finance, retail, HR, marketing, management, and law.
What is a commercial graduate scheme?
If you’re looking to go down the commercial graduate scheme route, you’ll find yourself working directly with the executive department to maximise sales and profit.
Your role will consist of going to the public to promote new products or expand on market research. From the get-go, you’ll be able to get first-hand experience, similarly to any other graduate scheme.
However, the downside is that commercial graduate schemes are very competitive, so be prepared to show your portfolio and showcase your passion for the industry.
Are graduate schemes worth it?
We think applying for a graduate scheme is worth it because it’s a great way to ease yourself into workplace responsibilities and they will give you first-hand experience in your chosen profession.
As well as learning how to work in today’s world, you’ll also have the chance to build a solid support network, develop your skillset, and prepare yourself for the future. Furthermore, you won’t fear losing your job after you’ve left university as most schemes offer fixed-term contracts, offering you a sense of job security.

]]>The post How to Write a Brilliant CV as a UK Student appeared first on .
]]>Even if you've got a showreel, a video intro or something creative to send to prospective employers, a basic CV should always accompany any application you make.
Student CVs versus other CVs
Before you sit down to create yours, it's essential to understand a bit more about how to write a CV if you're a UK student, and what makes it slightly different from most others. Most CVs are highly focused on experience levels, knowledge and skills, and only touch briefly on character traits; a student CV is often the exact opposite.
Prospective employers already know that as a young person, you're unlikely to have loads of practical skills under your belt, which means the experience section of your CV might look a little thin. That's okay! A new CV is an excellent opportunity to include detail on your positive attributes, what motivates you, and what some of your character strengths are.
How to write a basic CV
There are hundreds of online templates which can show you in detail how to write a good CV for students, with various layouts and styles. Regardless of which one you choose, it's essential to ensure your CV always includes the three important basics:
- Personal details – Your name, contact number, and email address must go at the top of the page. If your email address doesn't scream professional, create a new one just for job hunting and correspondence.
- Education and qualifications – The class or course you completed most recently should go at the top of this section. Include any specific skills learnt or any significant projects you have worked on.
Work experience/Skills – If you're applying for an internship or don't have any work experience yet, you don't have to include this on your first CV. However, adding that you have specific skills that are relevant to the job is beneficial. This could consist of using the Microsoft Suite, Adobe program like Photoshop, or posting ads on social.
Use your social networks
It's always a good idea to create and flesh out a LinkedIn profile, which will grow over time and give prospective employers something to review online. You don't need to include any other social profiles unless they contain content specifically related to the job you're applying for, e.g., food blogging. Don't include links to your personal Insta or TikTok account unless they make an excellent case for hiring you!
Keep it short
Keep your CV to one page only. This saves time for the employer and helps you stick to your most important info. It's competitive out there, and you want to make an impression quickly.
Include a Cover Letter
Cover letters aren't always necessary, but they can definitely give you a competitive edge when applying for a job. Unline your CV, which showcases your skills, experience and achievements, a cover letter is a brilliant way to introduce yourself, add a tailored note to the company you are applying at, and ultimately persuade someone to meet you.
A cover letter needs to be specific to the job you are applying for, so do some research on the company beforehand and make sure you tie it into how you can contribute. This should also be kept concise and to the point, addressed to the company or the name of the person who put out the job ad.
How to find a job
Once your CV is ready, it's time to send it out. Depending on what kind of work you're looking for, entry-level positions such as bar or server work is an easy way to make money. Simply ask at a local restaurant or hotel nearby if they have any available positions.
If you're looking for internships or entry-level positions in a different sector, LinkedIn enables you to search for jobs using filters to find something that's appealing and within your skillset.
Many companies offer internships positions while you study and can be extremely beneficial. Keep your eyes on your favourite brands for these opportunities. Now that you know how to write a CV, it's time to take the next step to the job you want.
Get your head in the right space
At Fresh, all of our student accommodation offers spacious workspace in each room so you can focus while working, studying or writing your CV. Some of our properties also include study spaces, where you can get into the right headspace for a productive CV writing session!

]]>The post How To Apply For An Apprenticeship appeared first on .
]]>While the COVID pandemic has had a significant impact on the hiring of apprentices, the good news is that at least 37% of businesses still plan on hiring, and an additional 20% plan to invest in more apprentices.
How do apprenticeships work?
While it differs per company, apprenticeships typically offer passionate candidates the opportunity to learn practical skills while studying. These opportunities are available to anyone over the age of 16. As an apprentice, you'll work as a regular employee, but with enough flexibility to ensure that you get the most out of your experience while also having time to attend lectures or study.
For graduates, apprenticeships allow you to apply what you’ve learned in uni to a real-life work environment, which is invaluable experience when just starting your career.>br />
How to apply for an apprenticeship
You’ll need a professional CV with your personal details, education and any prior work experience or skills you can bring to the table. Make sure that both your CV and cover letter are in line with what the company is looking for.
Tips to remember
- Don’t send the same cover letter to several businesses.
- There are loads of good candidates, so focus on what skills, knowledge and character traits set you apart from anyone else applying.
- Research the company you’re applying with.
- If looking further afield for opportunities, start in larger cities like London and Dublin while expanding your search outwards.
How to find an apprenticeship
There are a few ways to find apprenticeships.
- Do a Google search for 'apprenticeship + job type' to browse for opportunities.
- Create a list of companies you would like to work for and visit their website career pages.
- Most popular job sites have apprenticeship sections or filters to enable searches through the latest opportunities.
- Visit tailored websites, like Find an Apprenticeship, ratemyapprenticeship.co.uk or ucas.com.
- Don't underestimate the power of word of mouth and networking. Use your social channels, LinkedIn profile and friend network to put the word out.
The COVID-impact
The pandemic has impacted the apprenticeship space, but the good news is the government has committed to investing in apprenticeships to help the economy recover, which means support measures will be put in place to help businesses take on new roles. There is still uncertainty around how these new roles will look, and how much remote working and distance learning will be involved. To find out more about apprenticeship stats in England, check out the UK Parliament website for the latest details.

]]>With that in mind, here’s a few options to help you make some decisions as you navigate your way towards 2021.
1. Explore a different industry
With the labour market unlikely to recover this year, many students have been left wondering how to find graduate jobs in a post-COVID world.
While the pandemic brought some sectors to a standstill, it also led to massive growth in others. Some of the sectors predicted to see the most growth in the coming months are digital media, online education, food retail and health services. In contrast, those set to see slower growth include tourism, fashion and the luxury sector, and traditional education.
Now could be an excellent time to put your chosen career path on pause for a short while and focus your efforts on industries that are thriving post-COVID. Finding a job in one of the least impacted sectors will be competitive, but it’s worth a try to buy some time while you figure out next steps.
2. Find a graduate job
Students wondering when to apply for graduate jobs used to be able to wait until the end of their uni year to get a CV prepared, get their LinkedIn prepped and become interview-ready, but things won’t be so straightforward as we head into 2021.
While interviews might still happen face to face, it’s essential to prepare for a full-online recruitment experience, with interviews taking place online and remote working playing a larger part of your first-job than you thought. Now is a good time to get your Zoom skills job-ready.
While uncertainty is high across the board, some positive news is that at 43%, almost half of UK employers have said they will continue to hire graduates as planned, with 34% making no change to the number of interns and placement students they plan to hire.
Other businesses are adjusting their recruitment strategies as they stabilise. While many have reduced the number of graduates and interns they originally planned for in 2020, only 3% said they plan to make a substantial decrease.
3. Check out graduate-friendly cities
If you’re thinking of moving to another city after uni, why not look at some of the most graduate-friendly cities in the UK? Glasgow offers exceptional business and networking opportunities, without sky-high rent prices, making it super student-friendly. Places like London, Liverpool or Birmingham can also provide great opportunities to graduates.
4. Start a business
Nothing drives innovation like necessity, and in the challenging COVID climate, more graduates are creating their own opportunities and starting their businesses. Research shows that a business is born every two hours at UK universities and that last year, graduates created around 30,000 job opportunities, which goes to show how pioneering graduates are.
Good luck!

]]>The post Google Searches for NHS Jobs Hit a 10-Year High! appeared first on .
]]>Major public support for the NHS is a positive story to come out of the pandemic. As the nation stepped up to show encouragement and initiatives like clap for carers put key workers in the spotlight, interest in NHS jobs has skyrocketed.
In March this year, Google searches for 'work for the NHS' jumped by a massive 333% compared to the same time in 2019. That's a lot of interest!
In fact, searches for NHS jobs are the highest they've been in 10 years according to our research, increasing by 315% since 2010, and hitting their highest-ever peak in March and April 2020.
The trend shows no signs of slowing, with searches for 'NHS jobs' continuing to rise into July across the UK, especially in the following areas:
| Where are the most searches for 'NHS jobs' coming from? | ||
| 1. Leeds – 13% | 6. Liverpool – 10% | 11. Stoke-on-Trent – 8% |
| 2. Bournemouth – 13% | 7. Oxford – 10% | 12. Southampton – 8% |
| 3. Plymouth – 12% | 8. Portsmouth – 9% | 13. Coventry – 8% |
| 4. Birmingham – 11% | 9. Leicester – 9% | 14. Bristol – 8% |
| 5. Sheffield- 11% | 10. Manchester – 9% | 15. London – 6% |
Renewed Support for the NHS
Despite being one of the largest employers in the world with around 1.5 million people on the books, the service desperately needs new workers to join the ranks and an inspired new generation who see the benefits of working for the NHS.
One of the biggest challenges facing the service today is the workforce gap, which could lead to a shortage of almost 250,000 people by 2030, with one of the largest set to be in nursing. It's already a problem, with around 68% of Brits saying the quality of care is the main thing they love about the NHS, with 62% saying lack of staff is equally disappointing.
Fortunately, 'work for the NHS' Google searches turned into something tangible this year. Between March and April, there were over 900,000 visits to the NHS jobs website, and over 400,000 people applied for a job.
Careers of the Future
Alongside interest in NHS jobs growing, so has an interest in healthcare at uni. Latest UCAS figures for 2020 show university applications have increased this year for medicine & dentistry and subjects allied to medicine, which includes everything from Neuroscience and Physiology to Nursing and Midwifery. At the same time, applications for nursing degrees have risen by 15% in 2020.
How to apply for work experience in the NHS
Work experience at the NHS is a great way to gain practical experience in either the 'clinical' field, which includes patient-related areas in nursing or medicine, or 'non-clinical' fields in areas like engineering or administration. Most roles require training, and clinical positions often require higher education.
The best way to apply for work experience in the NHS is to:
- Shortlist the NHS career areas you are most interested in
- Ensure you have a comprehensive CV
- Find and contact your closest NHS Trust and ask to speak to their HR or learning and development department
