Step out the door of your student accommodation in Canterbury and you're just moments from an indie coffee shop, cool bar, boutique or club. Head a little further afield and you can explore the quirky shops and oyster houses in Whitstable, take a tasting tour at a local vineyard, or visit the iconic white cliffs at Dover.
The Gulbenkian arts centre at University of Kent is a catalyst for creative talent with its theatre, cinema and cabaret performances. But it's not the only venue putting culture on the map in Canterbury. The Marlowe Theatre is where to watch touring West End shows, and there's contemporary art at the Sidney Cooper Gallery at Canterbury Christ Church University. The international Canterbury Festival is a two-week celebration of science, music, talks and performance.
Walk its roads and cobbled courtyards to discover Canterbury's history. The area was occupied before the Romans established a town here – find out more with a trip to the Canterbury Roman Museum. The famous Canterbury Cathedral was built in 597CE and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Modern Canterbury is a thriving market town with a large and friendly student community.
Trains from London to Canterbury take less than an hour. Travel via road from the West via the M3, or North via London. Within Canterbury itself, you can get around by foot, bike or bus.
