UCAS applications are made, and you’ve finally decided your uni choices – it’s time to explore what accommodation is on offer. The city of London is divided into six zones. Zone 1 is the centre of the city, while Zone 6 is on the outskirts, also known as Greater London. The closer you get to Central London, the more expensive it’s likely to be, but travelling around is easy with bikes, buses, trains and the Underground – so no matter where you stay, you’ll be able to get in and out of London.

How to find cheap student accommodation in London.

Learning different ways to pay off your student loan is one thing, but knowing how to be smart with your money is another.

Depending on where your uni is based in London and how much money you want to spend on rent each week, this is a great starting point for finding the right student accommodation. Think about how far your accommodation is from your uni as transport can also be another additional cost. While living in zone 6 may be cheaper than living in zone 1, you may also have to pay for commuting costs unless your accommodation offers a private shuttle service to and from.

Types of student accommodation in London

University Students Halls of Residence

University halls that are ‘on-campus’ or close to the main buildings, these are usually arranged directly through your university for your first year of study This setup usually gives you a private or shared bathroom with a shared kitchen.

What facilities and amenities you get can differ across all university halls, but the cost usually includes things such as a bed, bathroom, cooking facilities, utilities and internet access. Ask your hall management for extras such as laundry and cleaning services.

Private Halls or Private Student Accommodation

Very similar to a uni hall, except it’s run by experienced private companies who manage flats, apartments and studios dedicated to student living. You’ll usually find them conveniently placed in city centres and popular areas with plenty of other students.

The cost of private accommodation is often higher than at uni halls, but the price gives you fully equipped spaces to choose your ideal setup, whether a shared flat or studio room with your private kitchen and bathroom. Private accommodation also usually include a whole host of social spaces, from Tv lounges and study rooms to Gyms and even a Swimming Pool!

Have you got questions?

How do deposits work?
A deposit is a payment you make before moving in. It is held by a third party and is paid back to you when you move out, provided there is no damage to the property. The deposit amount will be displayed when you select your accommodation, but it can’t be deducted from the rent.

What is a Tenancy Agreement?
The Tenancy Agreement is the legal document that outlines all of the detail relating to your rental, including how much you must pay each month, your deposit amount, and the responsibilities of you and the landlord or private rental company. It may also include all the services you can expect to be covered by your monthly rent, such as cleaning services, wifi, and any electricity or gas bills.

How often do I pay rent?
Your Tenancy Agreement will say how often you need to pay rent, which is typically monthly or by the term or semester.
