Coventry has a lot to discover – from its historical backgrounds to its range of quirky restaurants and bars. It’s the ideal location for any student, no matter your age. We have researched the top things to see and do in the city, so that you don’t have to!
Bars & Restaurants
Coventry holds a range of breweries and restaurants you wouldn’t want to miss, with these being our top 3 spots:
Turmeric Gold
If you fancy a cheeky Indian in the heart of the city, you’ve come to the right place. Turmeric gold sits at a comfortable 4.5/5 on trip advisor and between the ambiance of a mid-13th century building and the mouth-watering food, we know why. There’s certainly something for everyone in this dining experience.
The Loft
Looking for somewhere a bit more casual? We’ve got you. The Loft sits just outside of the city centre and offers an intimate space for you and your friends. If you’re missing some home comforts, they offer a Sunday dinner (on Sundays, of course) but be warned, it’ll have you back week after week.
Twisted Barrel
Perhaps going out for a meal isn’t your thing. If you find going for a well-poured drink or two suits you better, then head to the twisted barrel. Offering a wide range of their own beers, you’ll be able to try something new! The brewery stands proudly by its vegan nature and some even state they deliver the ‘best beers in town’.
History
A city filled to the brim with history carries with it plenty to see and do. There’s never a dull moment in Coventry and we want to make sure you explore everything it has to offer.
This hidden gem sits right on Bayley Lane, unveiling the past of its rich heritage. They host a range of events that vary from afternoon tea to an up-cycling clothes workshop, so even if you’re not directly fascinated by what stories those walls could tell, you’ll still find yourself indulged in something else.
Students can also apply for a Go CV card, which gives reduced admission rates. You can then explore the guildhall for only £3.50pp.
Coventry Cathedral
You’ll certainly find yourself spending more time here than you would ever expect. Staring at the ruins and moving on to the new church, followed by adventuring off to see the Baptistery window, its worth your time! Make sure you check their calendar to ensure you can get the most out of your day.
With a valid student card, you can also climb to the top of the cathedral tower for less, giving you the best views of Coventry from the third highest cathedral in the UK.
Travel
Moving to a new city can be scary, especially if you don’t understand how to manage getting around yet. Thankfully, you can use the ‘travel for west midlands’ website for that extra bit of guidance whilst you learn. You can also get student discounts on bus services in Coventry. All you need to do is prove that you are in full-time education (a letter from your university is necessary).
We recommend getting a swift photocard – if you activate ‘swift go’ you will be able to tap it on buses and trams and then be charged based on your journey (rather than buying a ticket), but without swift go the card is also useful for purchasing seasonal travel tickets and monthly direct debit tickets.
Nature
Spending some time surrounded by greenery is for sure something students need to do – such as a breath of fresh air! (Literally)
Coombe Abbey park
With over 500 acres to explore, including an 80-acre lake, you have the perfect spot for a nice stroll or a picnic with your friends. If you travel here during April to September you will also be able to see the flower meadows as they peak, intense with scents and colours.
Go Ape
Coombe Abbey also has a tree-top adventure course to spike some adrenaline. Go Ape is an activity like no other from scoping the area high up and flying down on zip lines to plummeting 12m, safely. For those who don’t particularly enjoy heights, axe-throwing is also available!
Even better, students receive 10% off the treetop challenge with a valid student beans account. What better time to give it a go?!
