Whether you're moving away from home or beginning a new course, university often brings a level of change and uncertainty many students haven't experienced before.

It's normal to wonder whether you'll make friends, enjoy your course, settle into accommodation or cope with the responsibilities that come with student life. Understanding what to expect, recognising common challenges and knowing where to find support can help make the transition feel more manageable.

Understanding the transition to university life

Transitioning from home, school or college into university is about much more than starting a new course. For many students, it brings new responsibilities, routines and support networks.

University often requires greater independence, with students expected to manage their own time, organise their studies and take responsibility for their academic progress. At the same time, many are adapting to new living arrangements, friendships and environments.

While the adjustment can feel challenging at first, it can also be an opportunity to develop confidence, resilience and valuable life skills. There is no "correct" timeline for settling in and every student's experience will be different.

Why moving to university can feel overwhelming

University often involves several major changes happening at once. Alongside a higher level of academic difficulty, learning methods and assessments, there are often practical responsibilities to manage. From managing finances to organising your own schedule, many responsibilities can feel unfamiliar at first.

Arguably, the most significant aspect of the transition is the social one. Leaving behind established friendships and familiar support networks can feel unsettling, particularly when you're trying to build new connections from scratch. Research has found that 40% of UK students do not feel they belong in university.

It's important to remember that feeling overwhelmed during this period is not a sign that you're failing or that university isn't right for you. More often, it's a normal response to a significant life change. As you become more familiar with your surroundings, establish routines and build new connections, many of these initial challenges often become easier to manage.

Managing expectations vs reality

Many students arrive at university with expectations shaped by social media, television, films and stories from other people. While it's natural to have expectations, reality often looks a little different.

Expectation: Everyone makes friends straight away

Reality: Some students find friendships quickly, while others need more time to build meaningful connections. It's completely normal if your friendship group doesn't form immediately.

Expectation: Everyone else will settle easier than I will

Reality: Many students worry about fitting in, loneliness and adjustment, even if they don't openly talk about it. It’s all too easy to look around and think everyone has found a group fit for them whilst you are still finding your path, but everyone is trying to do the same and find out where and who suits them best.

Expectation: I need to make the most of every opportunity

Reality: It's impossible to do everything. University isn't about attending every event, joining every society or constantly being social. Finding a balance that works for you and serves your interests is far more important.

Expectation: If I’m struggling, I’ve made the wrong decision

Reality: Feeling homesick, overwhelmed or uncertain doesn't mean university isn't right for you. These feelings are common during periods of significant change and usually become easier to manage as you settle in.

Leaving home: Coping with independence

For many students, university is the first time they've managed day-to-day life independently. Alongside studying, you may be responsible for budgeting, cooking, laundry and organising your own schedule.

Most students don't arrive knowing how to manage every aspect of independent living, and learning these skills is often part of the university experience itself. Focusing on small, achievable steps can make responsibilities feel much more manageable.

Some students may face additional challenges due to poor mental health, disability, financial pressures or caring responsibilities. If you're finding the adjustment difficult, support is available through your university and student wellbeing services.

Homesickness and adjusting to a new environment

Missing home is one of the most common experiences students face when starting university. Whether you've moved across the country or only a few miles away, it's natural to miss familiar people, routines and surroundings.

Homesickness doesn't mean you've made the wrong decision or that you're not enjoying university. In many cases, it simply reflects that you're adapting to a completely new environment.

While homesickness often becomes easier to manage over time, there are several things that can help:

  1. Stay connected to home

Keeping in touch with family and friends can provide reassurance during periods of change.

    1. Get involved in university life.

Joining societies, attending events and exploring your local area can help build a greater sense of belonging.

      1. Give yourself time

Adjustment rarely happens overnight. Most students experience periods of uncertainty while settling into university life.

        Balancing academic and social life

While students have boundless opportunities to meet people and try new experiences throughout their time in university, it's also important to stay on top of coursework, lectures and deadlines. Finding a balance that works can reduce stress and make university life more enjoyable overall.

        • Prioritise your time

Using a calendar, planner or to-do list can help you manage lectures, assignments and social commitments.

          • Make time for social occasions

Friendships, societies and social events can provide an important break from academic pressures.

            • Avoid comparing yourself to others

Everyone balances university life differently. Focus on finding an approach that supports your wellbeing and academic goals.

              • Accept that balance isn’t always perfect

There will be periods when coursework takes priority and others when you're more social. Balance is about flexibility rather than perfection.

Making friends and finding your community

One of the biggest concerns students have before university is making friends. While some people feel comfortable introducing themselves to others, many students feel nervous about meeting new people.

                • Start small

Making friends doesn't have to involve introducing yourself to everyone you meet. Often, friendships begin through small conversations before a lecture, during a seminar, in accommodation or while attending an event. Simple interactions can gradually grow into meaningful relationships over time.

                  • Join societies and take part in activities

Societies, sports clubs, volunteering opportunities and student groups can be great places to meet people with similar interests. Shared activities often provide natural conversation starters and can make social situations feel less intimidating.

                    • Be patient

Building friendships takes time. While some people connect quickly, many students spend weeks or months finding people they genuinely click with.

                      • Focus on quality over quantity

University isn't a popularity contest. Having a small group of supportive friends can be far more valuable than knowing lots of people on a surface level. Focus on building genuine connections rather than worrying about the size of your social circle.

                        Navigating shared living accommodation

Living with people you haven't met before can be one of the biggest adjustments of university life. Different habits, routines and expectations can sometimes lead to disagreements.

The best way to avoid misunderstandings is through open and respectful communication. Simple conversations about cleaning, noise levels and shared responsibilities can help everyone feel more comfortable.

                        For example:

                        • "Would it help if we agreed a cleaning rota?"

                          • "What are everyone's thoughts on noise during the week?"

                            • "Is there anything that would make the flat more comfortable for everyone?"

Remember, flatmates don't have to become best friends. Living together respectfully is often enough to create a positive shared environment.

                              Creating healthy routines and habits

Healthy routines can help make the transition to university more manageable. Simple habits such as getting enough sleep, setting aside regular study time, staying active and maintaining social connections can all support your wellbeing.

It's important to remember that routines don't need to be perfect. The aim is to create habits that help you feel organised, balanced and able to manage the demands of university life.

Some students also find reflective practices such as journalling helpful. Tools such as Positive You Journal on the Wisdom app can support this process by helping students record and reflect on their thoughts and experiences.

Knowing when and how to ask for help

Adjusting to university life can take time, and it's normal to experience periods of stress, uncertainty or homesickness along the way. However, there may be times when additional support could help you manage challenges more effectively and prevent them from becoming overwhelming.

You may benefit from seeking further support if:

                              • Feelings of loneliness, homesickness or isolation aren't improving over time.

                                • You're finding it difficult to cope with academic pressures.

                                  • Your mood is affecting your studies, relationships or daily life.

                                    • Feelings of stress or anxiety are becoming difficult to manage.

                                      • You're feeling overwhelmed and unsure where to turn.

Seeking support is a positive part of managing university life and looking after your wellbeing. In fact, recognising when you need help and taking action is a huge part of living independently, as you have to be self-aware enough to recognise the situation.

Most universities offer a range of support services, including wellbeing teams, counselling services, personal tutors, student support advisers and peer support programmes. These services are designed to help students navigate the challenges that can come with university life, whether that's homesickness, loneliness, academic stress, relationship difficulties or concerns about mental wellbeing.

Your institution provides you with access to a Student Assistance Programme (SAP) through HA | Wisdom Wellbeing providing often necessary, expert support. Using our services, you can confidentially connect with an accredited counsellor, 24/7, all-year round. As well as this, there are a host of wellbeing resources, self-help tools and other resources available on the Wisdom app. Each tool offers practical support for managing stress, building resilience and maintaining positive wellbeing habits to help you settle easier
