Long-distance relationships are a common part of student life. This may involve attending different colleges, studying at universities in different cities or maintaining relationships during placements and study abroad programmes.

Whether it involves a partner, close friends or family members, distance can create challenges around communication, connection and maintaining relationships alongside the demands of student life.

What is a long-distance relationship?

A long-distance relationship is any relationship where regular face-to-face contact is limited because people live too far apart to see each other frequently. While many people associate long-distance relationships with romantic partners, they can also involve close friendships and family relationships.

Long-distance relationships are a natural part of student life. Moving to a new city, studying abroad or undertaking placements can create physical distance between students and the people who matter to them. Relationships that once involved seeing each other every day may suddenly rely on phone calls, video chats and messages instead.

Distance often requires people to be more intentional about staying connected. Instead of relying on regular face-to-face contact, students may need to plan conversations, stay involved in each other's lives and find new ways to maintain meaningful relationships.

Why long-distance relationships can be challenging for students

Long-distance relationships can be rewarding, but they often require greater effort to maintain. Alongside academic pressures, new responsibilities and changing social lives, students may find it difficult to balance existing relationships with the demands of college or university.

Being apart can mean missing everyday moments, important events and opportunities to support one another in person. Financial pressures, travel costs, disability-related access needs and limited free time can also make seeing loved ones more difficult.

Distance can also contribute to feelings of loneliness, particularly during periods of homesickness, stress or transition. A recent UK survey found that 74% of full-time students reported experiencing loneliness, highlighting how common these experiences can be.

Challenges of long-distance relationships between friends and family

Moving away for education often means spending less time with established support networks. While technology makes it easier to stay connected, relationships with friends and family may still face challenges as routines, responsibilities and priorities change.
