The kitchen is the communal part of your student home, but it’s also the community. It’s where you eat meals, gossip with new friends, indulge in post-night-out snacks and practice questionable cooking experiments. But with so many people using the same space, it can go from spotless to chaos fast. Here’s how to keep it clean, safe and looking brand new all year long.

1. Keep on top of waste and recycling

Waste management is key to keeping your kitchen looking and smelling fresh. Bins always fill up faster than you think, so take turns to empty them. Rinse out all recyclables and make sure they’re disposed of properly and avoid letting any food waste linger for too long. It keeps the kitchen fresh and stops any unwanted smells or pesky fruit flies from moving in.

2. Cross-contamination basics

Preventing food poisoning is easier than you think. Make sure you keep raw meat separate from the rest of your ingredients and use different chopping boards. When you’ve finished cooking, wash everything in hot soapy water and wipe down surfaces. These easy habits mean a safer kitchen for everyone – and no missing out on a pub night!

3. Surviving the shared fridge

The shared fridge is prime territory for chaos, so stay one step ahead. Label your items, avoid leaving leftovers unsealed and check dates regularly. Clean up spills when they happen – no one wants to discover sticky shelves or mystery puddles. A quick weekly clear-out keeps things organised and makes cooking way less stressful.

4. Wash your hands regularly

It sounds obvious, but it really does matter. Wash your hands before cooking and after handling any raw ingredients. It keeps both you and the kitchen healthier.

5. Clean taps

Fresh maintain all water systems, but we still need your help to keep the water hygienic for everyone. Be sure to flush all outlets in your accommodation regularly, keep all taps (and shower heads) clean to prevent bacterial build up, and if you’re going to be away for more than seven days, please let a member of Fresh staff know so we can flush the outlets for you.

6. Wash AND dry your dishes after every meal

Washing up is great, but leaving things to ‘air dry’ for three days isn’t. Dry and put away your dishes so the sides stay clear and everyone has space to cook.

7. Keep good habits after the holidays

No one wants to be greeted after Christmas by a month-old loaf of bread. Do a quick reset by clearing out old food, checking cupboards and wiping down surfaces. A clean start makes the term feel much easier.

8. Clean up any spills

You’re here for the thrills… but the spills? Tackle those instantly. A quick wipe stops stains from setting in, keeps the kitchen smelling fresh and avoids any pest problems later.

9. Look after shared appliances

Microwaves, hobs, ovens and kettles last longer when cared for. Instead of leaving them to get caked in food, take some preventative measures: cover food before microwaving, wipe hobs down after use and always use baking trays to stop the oven from getting out of control.

10. Teamwork makes the clean work

Create a cleaning rota or divide tasks fairly between you and your flatmates. Everyone benefits from a clean kitchen, so everyone should pitch in. Plus, it avoids that awkward ‘Who left this tuna out?’ conversation.

Stay Clean. Stay Fresh.

A Fresh kitchen is a happy kitchen. Keep up the small habits and tackle messes before they become mysteries. Do that, and your space will stay clean, calm and ready for every flat feast, coffee catch-up and late-night gossip session to come. Explore Fresh accommodations and find a home that makes day-to-day living feel effortless.
