Staying Safe in Your Student Home

Moving into student accommodation is exciting. You get to meet your new flatmates, settle into new routines and relish a new freedom. But it’s also a good idea to know how to keep yourself and your flatmates safe, because staying secure means you can enjoy your new student life with confidence.

Lock up and stay secure

Before you head out, take a quick moment to make sure everything’s as it should be: doors locked, windows shut and any fire doors properly closed. It only takes a few seconds, but it makes a big difference to your peace of mind.

Know your exit routes

Emergencies are rare, but knowing your building’s exits and fire alarm points is essential; you’ll thank yourself if a fire alarm ever goes off. If you, or someone you live with, would benefit from extra support in an emergency, make sure you arrange a Personal Evacuation Plan with your residents’ team, who will provide you with help exiting the building in the event of an evacuation.

Window restrictors

Window restrictors might feel a bit frustrating in summer, but they’re there for a really important reason: to prevent accidents and make sure everyone in the building stays safe. They’re designed to let fresh air in while stopping windows from opening wide enough to become a risk. You don’t need to do anything to maintain them as they’re regularly checked by the Fresh team. If you ever notice any damage, just submit a maintenance request and it’ll be sorted out quickly.

Fire doors

Fire doors are a vital part of the building’s fire safety system. They’re specially designed to slow the spread of smoke and flames, giving everyone more time to evacuate safely. Keep them fully closed at all times, don’t wedge them open (even ‘just for a minute’), and report any damage straight away.

Safe scents and flames

Candles, incense and oil burners might be part of your ideal cosy setup, but they’re not allowed in student accommodation because of the fire risk. The good news? You can still create a warm, great-smelling space without an open flame. Try LED candles for ambience, plug-in or reed diffusers, or room sprays to keep things fresh and safe.

Tailgating

Tailgating is when someone follows you into the building without using their own fob, and it’s one of the easiest ways for unauthorised people to gain access. Fresh buildings already have secure entry systems, CCTV and on-site teams to keep everyone safe, but a little awareness from residents goes a long way too. Make sure you know who walked in with you, close doors fully behind you and keep your face visible at entrances by removing helmets or face coverings. If something doesn’t feel right, or you’re not sure whether someone should be inside the building, contact the Fresh team immediately. Safety is a shared effort, and these small habits help keep everyone in the community protected.

Smoke and heat detectors

These little devices save lives. Test them regularly and never disable or cover them with anything. If something isn’t working, let your building management know right away.
