Are you heading to Sheffield for university this September and looking at what the city has to offer? Or perhaps you’re already living here and want to know more about your home?
Well, we’re making your life that little bit easier with this guide of the top 10 things to do in the ‘Steel City’.
Dine out at Church – Temple of Fun.
Owned by the iconic lead singer of Bring Me The Horizon (Oli Sykes) this restaurant is a must-visit for anyone living or visiting Sheffield.
Operating a fully-vegan menu and artistic décor, it’s perfect for a student crowd. However, this restaurant is not a one hit wonder with it doubling as a 220-capacity live music venue! Find Church – Temple of Fun in Kelham Island.
Discover the world of board games
We promise we’re not trying to bore you so stick with us here. Treehouse board game café, located just outside of the city centre, boasts over 800 board games in their fully-stocked library.
Find yourself testing your knowledge or tactical skills against your new flatmates. It’s the perfect opportunity to break the ice and build new connections.
Shop at Meadowhall
If you’re after some much-needed retail therapy, or maybe just a good browse, find your way to Meadowhall. Discover incredible student offers at a variety of high-end stores or treat yourself to a meal at the Oasis food hall. It’s easy to spend a day here and with great transport options from the city centre there’s no excuse not to give it a go!
Find your new favourite coffee shop
Whilst coffee might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the ‘Steel City’, it is for sure something we’re good at!
Head over to Division Street to find the likes of ‘Steamyard’ – a unique independent (and high-quality) coffee shop. Or perhaps you’d prefer a taste of New Zealand at Tamper, located in Sellers Wheel.
There’s plenty to explore so whether it's to get your head down during exam season or a well-deserved morning boost, you’ll find just what you need.
Cuddle with cats at Tabby Teas
You’ve probably heard of the adorable cat cafes dotted around UK cities and Tabby Teas is Sheffield’s own!
Relax with a hot drink and a slice of cake whilst being surrounded by loving, and adorable, cats.
All cats that call Tabby Teas their home were rescued, with the café providing them a new lease of life. Your trip to the café helps provide support and care for our much-loved furry friends.
Don’t forget to book in advance to secure your spot.
Explore the nightlife
Sheffield hosts some well-known nightlife venues, including Leadmill and Corporation.
Both double as live music venues to discover emerging artists before transforming into clubs in the evening.
The city’s iconic ‘West Street’ is also a favourite among students from both Sheffield Hallam and the University of Sheffield.
Discover the likes of West Street Live, Tiger Works and Hallamshire Hotel, all mere metres away from one another!
Spend the evening at Orchard/Leopold square
These two neighbouring places in the heart of the City Centre are the perfect place to spend your afternoon or evening during your time in Sheffield.
Orchard Square is ideal for those wanting great student deals and a well-deserved post-lecture drink, while Leopold Square hosts iconic chain restaurants such as Pho and Wagamama’s to curb those cravings!
The two both have a range of chains and independent businesses so don’t forget to love local and support the Sheffield-owned bars and restaurants too.
Game Show All-Stars
Located on the cusp of Orchard Square, Game Show All-Stars is perfect for those who love to embrace their competitive side.
Venture through re-makes of your favourite classic television shows such as Word Race (inspired by Countdown) and Fastest Contestant First (Inspired by Who Wants To Be A Millionaire) and see how well you perform when you’re in the hot seat!
Discover new sounds at Tramlines
If you find yourself in Sheffield during Summer and looking for the perfect weekend outing, Tramlines Festival is the perfect getaway.
Supporting the local area of Hillsborough, Tramlines sees music artists and comedy acts travelling across the country to perform every July.
This year’s lineup consists of the sounds of: Scouting for Girls, KASABIAN, The Last Dinner Party, Pulp, Rizzle Kicks and Franz Ferdinand to name a few.
Living in Sheffield during this event is perfect to avoid those pesky hotel and train fees, why not give it a look?
Explore Leahs Yard
Leahs Yard is one of the newest additions to our city, hosting a variety of independent businesses for you to explore at your fingertips.
Whether you’re on the hunt for the perfect gift, an indulgent chocolate beverage or simply looking for somewhere to have a peaceful browse, you’re sure to have a good time.
Leah’s Yard is also situated next door to Europe's largest purpose-built food hall, Cambridge Street Collective, where you can discover tastes from across the globe all under one roof.
